Notes:

Ensure your file's visibility in Google Drive is set to "Anyone with the link." If it is set to "Restricted," only users who are logged into Google and have been granted access will be able to use the direct link (which may not be what you want).
This tool only works for files that you have uploaded; it does not apply to documents created in Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides.
For very large files, the direct link might first open a page indicating that Google cannot scan the file for viruses due to its size. From that page, you will be able to download the file.
